Vehicle Licence Plates

[previous page] [next page] [table of contents][page overview]

German vehicle licence plates consist of a combination of $ \le 3$ alphabetic characters referring to the administrative district, plus $ \le 2$ further alphabetic characters as well as a number with up to four digits. An example from the district Stuttgart is

\includegraphics[width=8cm]{Kennzeichen}

There are $ 26^n$ combinations of $ n$ alphabetic characters and therefore

$\displaystyle (26 + 26^2 + 26^3)\cdot(26+26^2)\cdot 9999 = 1.28 \cdot 10^{11}
$

possible licence plates (neglecting any associations with the district's name etc.).
