With respect to the arrangement of non-zero matrix elements $a_{i,j}$ we distinguish between different types of matrices:

Diagonal matrices: $a_{i,j}=0$ for $i\ne j$ ;
Banded matrices: $a_{i,j}=0$ for $\vert i-j\vert>k$ , where is the number of non-zero diagonals, called band width.
Upper (lower) triangular matrices: $a_{i,j}=0$ for ();

Generally, an $(m\times n)$ -matrix is called weakly occupied if there are only $c\max(m,n)$ non-zero elements, where is a not too large constant.
